Mechanical Engineer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Engineer will drive engineering projects, including new product development, process control, and manufacturing support. This individual will exercise functional authority for mechanical design, prototyping, verification testing, vendor sourcing, manufacturing procedures, and engineering documentation while working with stakeholders from various departments.

  • Research, design, develop, and evaluate mechanical components, products, and systems by using applied mechanical engineering principles.
  • Develop high-level and detailed designs in accordance with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate materials to optimize design and assembly processes.
  • Support with fabricating and assembling electro/mechanical prototypes from solid models, sketches, or schematics.
  • Conduct functional tests to evaluate the performance and reliability of prototypes and production models.
  • Lead project initiatives to support sustaining engineering and NPD using the ECO process.
  • Provide manufacturing support by leading dedicated projects that improve the productivity, capability, and ergonomics of processing equipment.
  • Evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Perform product/process analysis to improve manufacturing processes and methods for cost reduction, quality improvement, and increased efficiency.
  • Perform research, design, and development of manufacturing processes, including production flow, assembly methods, and production equipment.
  • Design, develop, and test and/or source and cost-justify various tools, machinery, and equipment for recommended manufacturing methods.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent.
  • Two to five years of related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of electro-mechanical design.
  • Strong understanding of SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge of lean principles.
  • Experience with the product development process within a regulated industry preferred (medical devices and ISO 13485 desirable).
  • Excellent project management skills: capable of defining and driving projects of varying scope.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills with an ability to proactively identify and resolve design and performance issues.
  • Demonstrated good technical documentation skills, experience in writing protocols and reports.
  • Ability to work in a project team environment.
  • Ability to conduct complex, important work under minimal supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Salary and Benefits Information:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000, calculated based on full-time employment. Offers are determined on a case-by-case basis considering multiple factors including job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. Embedded Hardware Engineer

LightScalpel is an American-based surgical carbon dioxide laser designer and manufacturer located in Bothell, Washington. Our mission is to provide surgeons with the highest quality, state-of-the-art, precise, reliable, and affordable surgical carbon dioxide laser solutions. We are dedicated to improving surgical outcomes for patients by providing enhanced clinical value and continually expanding the horizon of laser surgery.

We are looking for a mid- to senior-level Engineer who will be accountable for the conceptualization and ideation, design, development, analysis, and implementation of innovative solutions to support the next generation CO2 laser systems. This position will be a critical contributor to all aspects of the hardware development process including specification, development, design reviews and testing at all levels. The role requires cross-functional work with stakeholders from various departments in LightScalpel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and prototype electronics components, utilizing expertise in embedded systems, microcontrollers, sensors, and programming languages.
  • Research, design, develop, and test both electronic hardware devices and embedded software , creating algorithms which enable the hardware to function.
  • Develop embedded hardware solutions making tradeoffs between hardware and software to minimize product cost.
  • Analyze and enhance efficiency, stability, and scalability of system resources.
  • Create and write cases to exercise and validate firmware.
  • Participate in systems level requirements definition, architecture, design, and interface designs.
  • Perform testing to validate product architecture and design. Conduct tests, validation and ensure documentation of electronic hardware in a regulated environment.
  • Understand and design existing interface specifications.
  • Participate in all project lifecycle phases, from hardware design and code development through unit testing, documentation, and release.
  • Maintain knowledge of OS coding techniques, IP protocols, interfaces, and hardware subsystems as well as strong architecture, programming, analog, and digital signal processing skills.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with stakeholders from various departments.
  • Manage software and other related consultant resources.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 5 years of hardware with firmware engineering experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of code development for microcontrollers or other embedded processors, allowing seamless integration with firmware.
  • Hardware-level debug experience, including familiarity with tools, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, etc.
  • Proficiency with debugging, power and performance optimization, and unit testing.
  • Strong proficiency with software development in C and 8051 assembly languages.
  • Strong knowledge of hardware engineering practices and patterns for the full hardware development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations.
  • Experience in electronic circuit development, 8051 microcontroller and variants.
  • Experience in translating electronic circuit design into PCBs with compact layouts and adherence to design guidelines,
  • Experience implementing DSP and control system algorithms on microcontrollers, a plus.
  • Experience within a regulated industry preferred (medical devices and ISO 13485 desirable)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks/projects.

Electronics Technician

The Electronics Technician assists engineers by performing analysis, testing, and support of machines, tools,
equipment, and mechanical systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with the Engineering Team to design, build, and test solutions to a variety of technical problems.
  • Inspect and modify existing designs and prototypes.
  • Conduct research, collect data, and write daily reports.
  • Assist engineers with fabricating and assembling mechanical prototype models from drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Conduct functional and operational tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production models.
  • With feedback from Engineers, repair, rework, or modify mechanical assemblies to meet operational specifications and tolerances.
  • Update assembly/test procedures and test records.
  • Lead project initiatives and use the ECO process to implement changes.
  • Provide manufacturing support by troubleshooting systems and completing non-standard work orders.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Associate degree in electronics technology, or similar.
  • An applicable license or certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant electronics technician experience.
  • Biomedical, manufacturing, or medical device manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience with lasers is a significant plus in this position but is not required.
  • Working knowledge of technical drawings and symbols.
  • Familiar with common diagnostic equipment including multimeter and oscilloscope.
  • Ability to resolve workstation-related problems affecting equipment, production, or quality.
  • Experience soldering electrical connections and components to circuit boards.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations.
  • Attention to detail and organization skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.

Salary and Benefits Information:

Salary: $25 to $31/hour DOE (calculated based on full-time employment)
