Dear Dr. Winter, I am looking to correct my smile. I have fairly straight teeth, but am interested in gum contouring. Is this something your practice can do? What would be involved? What is the cost? Are consultations free? Thank you.
Dear S. yes we do recontouring for my esthetic smile displays! In fact we now have the newest, most researched laser on the market called LightScalpel! It is a CO2 laser that has superpulsed technology which provides the most comfortable, fastest healing of soft tissue available today.
Some dental practices have diode lasers, which heat a fiber-optic cable to between 500 and 900 degrees Celsius. This burns the tissue and causes a deep zone of necrosis or cell death, which can cause more pain and prolonged healing. A CO2 laser interacts with cells in the 10,600 nm wavelength, which will cause the water within the cell to heat and vaporize which limits thermal damage to deeper tissues.
The CO2 laser is the best device for biopsies, removal of tissue tags, crown lengthening procedures, exposure of crown margins, frenectemies, soft tissue recontouring and has the most studies done by Universities to follow it’s effectiveness and healing. The laser can also be used to treat failing implants (peri-implantitis), help heal cold sores and is known as the most precise cutting device used in dentistry as we can change the wavelength, penetration and depth of cut precisely. Implant uncovery can be done with this laser as the laser energy is not absorbed into the titanium implant and only treats the smear layer of bacteria that may be causing an implant to lose bone.
