2019 ADA Children’s Airway Conference Session Three: Anatomy Concerns: What’s Important About This?

ADA CE Online

1.5 CE credit hours

This second ADA Children’s Airway Conference will guide the general, pediatric and orthodontic practitioner in the significance of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) in children and how the ADA policy statement on “The Role of Dentistry in the Treatment of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders” directs them to address the issue. By expanding their provider scope beyond the current concentration on dental disease, dentists will see their role in children’s overall health. With the growing awareness of airway issues in the profession and the public, getting a handle on this service is critical toward modernizing the dental practice in the 21st century. Currently, practitioners that are already involved in this arena are experiencing a whole new level of practice productively and satisfaction.

The Tongue’s Role in Airway, Sleep, and Feeding Issues in Children

Dental Town

2.5 CE credit hours

Pediatric airway issues, sleep issues, and feeding issues are very common and often last into adulthood if left untreated. Early identification and treatment of these issues are critical to allow children to thrive and have normal growth and development. The dentist is well-positioned to identify those at risk, and provide treatment or refer for treatment utilizing a team approach to care.

Tongue-Ties and Lip-Ties – Treatment and Case Studies

Dental Town

2 CE credit hours

In this follow up course, Part 2, we will discuss treatment strategies, laser selection, a step-by-step technique, and a dozen clinical cases. There are many clinical videos to illustrate the technique with two different types of lasers (diode and CO2) that can be used to perform the procedure. The treatment is relatively simple, but the diagnosis, patient history, and case selection discussed in Part 1 is critical to ensure the treatment is necessary and can be effective. It is recommended to view Part 1 before viewing this course.

Tongue and Lip Ties: Assessment, Diagnosis and Evidence for Treatment

Dental Town

1.5 CE credit hours

Tongue-tie is a very common condition affecting around 10% (or more) of the population. The controversial nature of tongue-tie is due to not having an accurate understanding of what it is, how to diagnose it, how it relates to common problems like nursing difficulties and speech issues, and how to treat it. There are also differing opinions about how to treat it by different disciplines from ENTs to pediatricians, dentists, speech therapists and lactation consultants. In this course, we will present the strong evidence supporting treatment of tongue-tie and lip-tie as it relates to breastfeeding, speech, and dental issues. The patient history, proper exam technique, and making a diagnosis will also be discussed in detail. It is critical to have a solid foundation of what a tongue and lip-tie are, how to recognize them, and the research that backs up the treatment before treatment should begin.

Hemostasis and Coagulation with Ablative Soft-Tissue Dental Lasers and Hot-Tip Devices

CDE World – Inside Dentistry

2 CE credit hours

Erbium laser wavelengths circa 3,000 nm are highly energy efficient and spatially accurate for photothermal ablation; their photothermal coagulation depths are significantly shorter than gingival blood vessel diameters. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser wavelengths circa 10,000 nm are extremely effective and spatially accurate photothermal ablation tools with exemplary coagulation ability as a result of a close match between their photothermal coagulation depths and the diameters of oral soft-tissue blood capillaries. In nonablative applications, coagulation depth can be increased for long pulses with extended heat propagation-driven coagulation depth in excess of the photothermal coagulation depth. Unlike CO2 and erbium lasers, soft-tissue ablative dental diodes are contact thermomechanical cutting devices. Their coagulation depth depends on the degree of the diode’s glass tip charring and can range from sub-millimeter (heat propagation-driven coagulation for significantly charred tips) to multi-millimeter (photothermal radiant coagulation for poorly charred tips).

The Use of a 10,600-nm CO2 Laser Mandibular Vestibular Extension in a Patient With a Chromosomal Disorder

CDE World – Compendium

2 CE credit hours

Vestibuloplasty involves a series of surgical procedures designed to restore alveolar ridge height by lowering the muscles attached to the buccal, labial, and lingual aspects of the jaws. The technique is indicated in cases of insufficient vestibular depth that may result from atrophy of the alveolar ridge and/or high attachment of muscle or movable mucosa. This article focuses on a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser vestibular extension procedure performed in a patient with Klinefelter syndrome, which is caused by a chromosomal abnormality. The 10,600-nm CO2 laser is shown to offer several advantages over a conventional scalpel and other laser wavelengths for soft-tissue pre-prosthetic surgery, including vestibular extension.

CO2 Laser Dentistry

Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University

6 CE credit hours

Fundamentals will be provided to understand all aspects of 10,600nm Super-Pulsed CO2 laser science. You will learn specific indications and interactions of laser wavelengths with hard and soft tissues and its capabilities and limitations. When using CO2 lasers, recovery is generally faster and the patient experiences more comfort. The CO2 laser ablates and coagulates the infected area as it removes diseased tissue, leaving healthy tissue undamaged when used properly.

Laser-Assisted Removal of Irritation Fibroma

CDE World – GLOH

0 CE credit hours

The 10.6 micrometers CO2 laser is both an efficient and spatially precise photo-thermal ablation device and excellent coagulator because of the close match between its coagulation depth and the diameters of oral soft-tissue capillaries. The excision of benign soft-tissue masses, such as irritation fibroma, with the flexible fiber waveguide 10.6 micrometers CO2 laser is a minimally invasive and typically suture-free soft tissue surgical procedure.

Laser-Assisted Operculectomy

CDE World – GLOH

0 CE credit hours

The ablation of hyperplastic oral soft tissue with the flexible fiber waveguide 10.6 micrometers CO2 laser is a minimally invasive and typically suture-free surgical modality that ensures dependable treatment. Its excellent hemostatic abilities and the minimal damage to adjacent healthy tissues make the CO2 laser a perfect surgical tool for treating oral soft-tissue lesions, including the inflamed operculum.
